Less than three weeks after Queensland Environment Minister Andrew Powell conceded that Gladstone harbour was a mess, he has given Gladstone Ports Corporation a free pass to increase the turbidity churned up in the water by their mass dredging operations.
“The ongoing environmental crisis in Gladstone harbour is a disaster for the Gladstone community, an embarrassment for Queensland and a national disgrace,” Australian Greens environment spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters said.
This year’s Chinchilla May Day parade should focus on the traditional concerns of May Day especially working conditions and social justice issues that affect working people.
Greens spokesperson Libby Connors said that unfortunately this did not happen last year.
The announcement that permitted turbidity levels have been raised for Gladstone Harbour is proof that politics, not scientific rigour, is determining environmental standards for the new LNP government.
