Greens lead senate candidate announced

Larissa Waters

Ms Waters is a solicitor with degrees in environmental science and law, who has worked for five years in the community sector as a public interest environmental lawyer.

In that time she has helped draft tougher tree clearing laws, worked on the landmark court case to protect the Great Barrier Reef from the proposed Nathan Dam in central Queensland, advocated for better protection of the state’s remaining pristine rivers and has written a proposal to protect the state’s most important wetlands from damaging developments.

“Many voters are realising that only the Greens have the long-term vision to lead Australia into a sustainable future.

“The Greens have responsible, workable policies and can be trusted with the balance of power in the Senate.

“We need to rescue the Senate from Coalition control, and restore its proper function as a house of review rather than a rubber stamp. If the Coalition still control the Senate after this election, Australians will get more policies like WorkChoices which erode quality of life for average families.

“Queensland is facing some major challenges, which neither the Coalition nor Labor are seriously addressing. They only think about the next election.

“The Greens take a long term view of how to lead the country into a just and sustainable future, so our kids have a clean environment, good working conditions, access to education and proper health care.

“Climate change is a huge threat to Queenslanders. With the continued drought, and food prices likely to increase, climate change is already affecting our economy.

“The Greens are about being proactive on climate change, to protect our economy and our environment into the long term. If climate change causes the Reef to bleach within 20 years - like 2,000 international scientists warn - that’s 63,000 jobs lost. And that’s loss of a beautiful and biodiverse treasure that everyone’s kids should have the right to see.

“I want to be proud of the world we leave for future generations, and of my contribution towards creating a sustainable, just and peaceful planet” concluded Ms Waters.
