Senator Bob Brown
Electoral success came in 1996 when Bob Brown was elected to the Senate to represent Tasmania. Senator Brown has been an extremely effective voice for the environment and social justice, campaigning on issues such as mandatory sentencing, forest protection, global warming and asylum seekers.
Senator Kerry Nettle
In 2001, Bob Brown was re-elected and Kerry Nettle was elected from NSW to join him in the Senate. Senator Nettle has put her activist background to good use, working on public education, Medicare and the proposed Free Trade Agreement with the USA.
Senator Christine Milne
Christine Milne was elected to represent Tasmania at the 2004 federal election and joined the Greens Senate team on 1 July 2005. Senator Milne has a long involvement in community activism and politics, beginning with the Franklin River campaign. Then she led the successful campaign to protect Tasmania’s north-west from the impacts of the proposed Wesley Vale Pulp Mill in the late 1980s and represented the electorate of Lyons in the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1989 to 1998. Senator Milne was leader of the Tasmanian Greens Party from 1993 to 1998. She has also worked as a secondary school teacher, a farmer and an adviser to Senator Brown. Senator Milne has been active in the global environment movement and is vice-president of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
Senator Rachel Siewert
In 2005 the size of our Senate team doubled. Rachel Siewert is the fourth in a line of strong Green women Senators from West. She brings to the team sixteen years leading the WA Conservation Council and training in agricultural science - to take on industrial relations, Indigenous affairs, social services and natural resource management.
