Independent public schools damage education and the economy
The Queensland Greens have called on Premier Campbell Newman to scrap the controversial Independent Public Schools initiative as they are damaging for Queensland’s education system and its economy.
Queensland Greens Spokesperson, Rachael Jacobs said “This is one of the most regressive moves in Queensland’s Education history.”
“Self-governing schools create inequity between schools and students. The Newman government is creating a two- tiered system that will widen the gap between rich and poor schools.”
“This will damage our economy because it will damage the teaching profession. We’ll also need to back-pedal to reverse the inequities created by this system. Independent Public Schools are bad for our children’s education and they’re bad for the economy.”
The Queensland Greens announcement came after the first 26 schools to participate in the scheme were announced yesterday. In the United States the similar Charter School system has led to larger class sizes, overworked teachers and a culture of teacher blaming.
“In the States they hold lotteries to get into Charter Schools.” Ms Jacobs said. “That’s not the system we want Queensland.” For further comment contact Rachael Jacobs 0414 305 600 E: firstname.lastname@example.org
