As speculation mounts about an election date the Queensland Greens are calling on Campbell Newman and Anna Bligh to put an end to future uncertainty by committing to implement fixed terms of Government if they win the election.

“If Campbell Newman is out there saying that governments have no mandate past the third anniversary of their election to power (which is actually technically incorrect), then he can solve that for future elections by implementing three year fixed terms” Qld Greens Spokesperson Jonathon Dykyj said.

“Having set polling days provides certainty for businesses, government departments and the community at large.  It also stops governments calling elections when it’s in their best interests but not necessarily in the best interests of the public or the parliament. ”

“While they are at it, the ALP and LNP can restore integrity and accountability to the political process which would begin with an Upper Houe – the house of review – to the Queensland parliamentary system and introduce proportional representation.”  Mr Dykyj said.

“All of these measures, long championed by the Greens, add up to a fairer and more democratic Queensland and the Greens will continue to push this agenda of integrity and accountability throughout the 2012 campaign and beyond, for the betterment of all Queenslanders.”
