The Queensland Greens have made it clear that they do not support freezing the salaries of public sector workers.
‘Public sector workers, like all workers, deserve a fair rate of pay for the important work that they do,’ said Queensland Greens spokesperson and candidate for Mt Coot-tha, Adam Stone.
‘A cap on wages is a very blunt instrument for reining in public sector costs. It could ultimately mean that, as normal inflation steadily ratchets up the cost of living, some public sector workers could find they are no longer receiving an adequate living wage.’
‘That is as unacceptable in the public sector as it is in any other part of our economy.’
‘Anyone calling for cost cutting in the public sector needs to get beyond such plainly unworkable ideas and start specifying precisely which services they think the community can do without.’
‘All parties must make it clear where they stand on this issue. If anyone is looking to freeze public sector wages, voters ought to know that when they enter the ballot box.’
