Today’s release of the results of soil and water testing conducted by the Wilderness Society at the site of a six month old spill of ‘produced water’ at a CSG drilling site in NSW is yet further evidence of the dangers of the massive expansion of the industry in Queensland, say the Queensland Greens.
‘The testing found unsafe levels of arsenic and lead six months after a spill, and yet we are to believe that this industry can safely co-exist with Queensland’s vital agricultural sector,’ said Greens spokesperson and candidate for Mt Coot-tha, Adam Stone.
‘There are still no safe disposal solutions for the staggering quantity of poor quality water that will be brought to the surface by this industry – more than half as much again as the amount of water that is presently extracted from the Great Artesian Basin for all other purposes. And yet the massive rollout of this industry across our best food-producing land continues unabated.’
‘Far greater care should be taken with our agricultural sector that is responsible for employing hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders and feeding millions.’
