Coal is the elephant in the room overlooked by the LNP

LNO environment spokesperson David Gibson has jumped way ahead of his party in trying to claim the high environmental ground on energy policy, Greens MP Ronan Lee said today.

Mr Gibson issued a media release earlier today claiming Mr Lee had "converted" to the LNP's position on the Gross Feed-In Tariff, which makes renewable energy a more attractive option for households and industry.

Mr Lee said he welcomed advances in environment policy by the LNP, especially given their history of vandalism in this area however, he wasn't convinced everything was rosy in the LNP garden.

"Dave Gibson needs to be careful he doesn't get too far ahead of his party on energy policy and forget that the LNP is backed by some of the most powerful mining interests in the country, including Clive Palmer.

"The Greens, like the LNP, support a Gross Feed-In Tariff but we also want to go much further.

"We challenge the LNP to urge their federal counterparts to support Greens Senator Christine Milne's private members bill in the Senate to introduce a gross feed-in tariff in every state and territory.

"We also challenge them to set a 40 per cent greenhouse gas reduction target for Queensland by 2020, to support the call by conservation groups to make coal mining companies legally responsible for their greenhouse gas emissions and to require at least 20 per cent of those emissions to be avoided or offset."
