Contest between Greens and Labor in by-election as Coalition fails to find a candidate

26 September 2007 - With the close of nominations for the by-election for the seat of Brisbane Central it is clear the contest will be between The Greens' Anne Boccabella and Labor's Grace Grace as the Liberals and then the Nationals failed to field a candidate.

Ms Boccabella said the Coalition parties had disenfranchised their traditional voters and are no longer relevant.

"I will provide a real alternative for voters as I am a local businesswoman of 28 years and have been involved in community activities for the past 20 years in the electorate," Ms Boccabella said.

"This demonstrates The Greens are the real opposition in Queensland, especially in urban electorates like Brisbane Central."

"This is a significant election in a seat vacated by the former premier and the Opposition had a responsibility to put their policy alternatives to the people of Brisbane."

The Greens received slightly under 20 per cent primary vote at the 2006 state election against the Labor incumbent Peter Beattie and believe they will substantially increase their vote in the absence of the Coalition.

"This is the moment the electors can voice their dissatisfaction with Mr Beattie's policies now being perpetuated by Anna Bligh."

"Many Liberal voters will be reluctant to embrace the extremism of Family First and we call on them to give the Labor Party a good shake in this election by voting for The Greens."

"With my skills and my proven ability to deliver outcomes, all voters in the Brisbane Central electorate can feel confident to vote for me. They are not obliged to vote for a factionally promoted Labor apparatchik."

"The community can have confidence that I would always involve them in transparent processes concerning issues in the electorate. I would seek a balance between the needs to expand infrastructure and maintain communities."
