Greens hopeful of Queensland Senator
3 November 2007 - The Greens are in their best position ever to will a Queensland Senate seat, following the lodgement of group voting tickets (Senate preferences) at noon today.
The Greens in Queensland will receive second preferences from the ALP, the Carers Alliance and What Women Want. The Greens will also receive preferences high up from the Democrats, Climate Change Coalition and other micro parties and independents.
The Greens in Queensland will preference the Carers Alliance, What Women Want and independents, before sending preferences to the Climate Change Coalition, the Democrats and then the ALP.
The Greens in Queensland placed Pauline Hanson in last place, with the Liberal/ National Coalition second last and Family First third last.
“The time has come to end Coalition dominance of the Senate, to get the Senate working as a house of review not a rubber stamp,” said Larissa Waters, Greens lead Senate candidate for Queensland.
“Based on recent Morgan Senate polling and preference flows, the last two Queensland Senate seats will be between the Greens, Coalition, Labor and Pauline Hanson. I think Queensland voters will choose the progressive Greens, for a more just and sustainable future for Australia,” said Ms Waters.
“It is likely that after this election, a minor party will hold the balance of power in the Senate.
“The Greens are hopeful that we will hold the balance of power in the Senate and be able to push for action on climate change and protection of workers’ rights.
“If it’s not us, we would like another progressive party to hold the balance of power, so in Queensland we have preferenced the Democrats high, and placed Pauline Hanson last and Family First third last on our preference ticket,” concluded Ms Waters.
