Greens Launch Their Local Election Campaign

17 Jan 2008 - Only the greens present an alternative vision for Brisbane. The ALP and the Libs might as well be one party. They vote the same on anything that matters

Greens Launch Brisbane City Council Campaign

Greens candidate for Lord Mayor, Ms Jo Bragg, said Greens candidates were the only candidates who were prepared to tackle climate change. “We will be campaigning to restore local representation on the big issues like transport and unsustainable development of our inner city and suburban green spaces,” she said.

“We have great candidates in the inner city wards such as Stuart Skabo for Toowong, Anne Bocabella for Central and Drew Hutton for the Gabba. The Greens have preselected a record number of candidates for this BCC election, 16 so far, with more to come. We are the only political party that will stand up for local views on local issues."

BRISBANE CITY HALL: The Queensland Greens launched their local election campaign on the steps of Brisbane City Hall today, sending a signal to voters that they are serious about fighting a strong campaign. Local council elections are where people are most inclined to vote Green.

“Our number one priority is cutting greenhouse gas emissions, fixing the public transport mess and curbing congestion. We will fight for light rail, more buses, and safe walking and cycling paths for families."

Ms Bragg said if elected, the Greens would implement policies to undo the financial disasters caused by Campbell Neman and the ALP.

“The Council's tunnels and bridges will create the same catastrophe that

New York experienced 30 years ago, causing thick congestion and local economic chaos. The Hale Street Bridge is a costly debacle that was loudly opposed by the Greens and the inner city community. It must be stopped. ”Can do Campbell” and the “me too” ALP together bear the responsibility.

“As a party, we want to fight to give our local communities a voice.

“We plan to put the integrity back into community consultation, to save green space, and to revive democratic participation.

“Greens candidates put local needs first. Dollars from developers cannot buy our support.

“Unlike the both ruling political parties in local council, we want to work with people rather than against them,” Ms Bragg said.

Ms Bragg is the only candidate for Lord Mayor who actively cycles and catches public transport when she commutes & has done so for 15 years – unlike acting Lord Mayor, Campbell Neman, who often reports to work driving a 4WD – without any car-sharing passengers.

“Only the Greens will bring a breath of fresh air for Brisbane," Ms Bragg said.
