Greens support bid to protect Kangaroo Point heritage

Queensland Greens MP, Ronan Lee, and spokesperson, Anne Boccabella, will combine tomorrow in the campaign to stop the destruction of the old Howard Smith wharves under the Storey Bridge.

This is part of the construction of a hotel and convention centre on the site.

The project will also destroy five heritage-listed air raid shelters, the eastern end of the park and the cliffs.

Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman, who describes the huge 250 room complex as a “boutique” hotel, is an avid supporter of the development.

“Both the State government and Brisbane City Council have supported developments in this relatively small area,” Mr Lee said.

“The local residents have clearly told the Lord Mayor they do not want this huge development taking over public land, obscuring people’s views, and destroying heritage but he is not listening.”

Ms Boccabella said the project was another nail in the coffin for Brisbane’s heritage.

“Who will champion Brisbane’s heritage?” Ms Boccabella asked. “Clearly, it won’t be our Liberal Lord Mayor Newman or our Labor Premier Bligh who have colluded to erode public space and heritage in this sensitive river site.

“The massive loss of heritage and character housing in the older, inner suburbs is a black mark on the record of both LNP and Labor as well as the State government and Brisbane City Council.

“Only the Greens have consistently defended our city’s heritage against the coalition of development interests and politicians.”
