Yet another feedlot

media release on the Qld Greens submission opposing another feedlot on the southern Downs.

The Queensland Greens have made a submission to the Southern Downs Regional Council objecting to another proposed intensive feedlot on the Leyburn-Cunningham Road.

Objections close on October 10 and the Greens are urging other members of the community concerned about the cumulative effects on groundwater, soil erosion and Condamine River water quality also to make submissions to the council.

The proposal would bring the number of feedlots within a 5 km radius to four with a combined carrying capacity of 18 000 animals.

‘Our submission focuses on negative resource impacts including climate change implications of large concentrations of methane,’ Greens spokesperson Libby Connors said today.

‘But I would urge neighbours and residents directly affected by the dust, flies and odour to let the council know of their concerns.’

Established feedlots in the area have already been responsible for effluent overflows which have polluted neighbouring farms.

Such risks are likely to become commonplace as the number of feedlots in the northern-New South Wales-southern Downs region concentrate up to 860 000 head of cattle on fragile catchments of the Condamine-Balonne.
