Candidate for The Gabba

About

Gary Kane has lived in South Brisbane since 1992 and is an enthusiastic advocate for maintaining the liveability and community spirit of this special part of Brisbane.

Gary is a full time environmental professional, sports lover and commuter cyclist. Gary has two teenagers at Brisbane State High School and is aware of the challenges of raising a family in our busy society. Gary is active in the local community and has been the manager of his son’s cricket team and the assistant coach of his daughter’s soccer team.

Gary lives in Highgate Hill in a low carbon footprint house, with roof insulation, solar panels, solar hot water, 15000 litres of water tanks, chickens and an organic vegetable garden. Gary also shops locally where possible.

Gary is passionately opposed to the over-development of the South Brisbane area, which has brought increased traffic congestion and is stretching local parks, affordable housing and schools.  Gary would require all new developments to provide 20% affordable housing and 0.2 hectares local parkland per 100 persons.

Gary was active in the Stop the Hale Street Bridge campaign and opposed the North South Bypass Tunnel. Gary would address traffic congestion by implementing the Greens $3 billion light rail plan which includes lines to West End, Hill End, Southbank, Woolloongabba, Dutton Park, Buranda, Stones Corner and Coorparoo.

Gary believes that we need to develop a regional plan which acknowledges the long term carrying capacity of South East Queensland if we are to have lasting solutions to the big issues of over-development, traffic congestion and water shortage.
