About
Helen Wainwright has recently moved to the Gold Coast to live in a sustainable house, generating her own electricity and not connected to mains water.
I have worked for many years as a Medical Scientist and have recently retired so that I have plenty of time for representing my community especially on environmental issues.
I have been interested and involved in many environmental issues over the years and rue the fact so little has been done in the past making the issue so much more important to act now. I support the Greens in their bid to be involved in planning for a sustainable lifestyle for now and for generations to come.
I have always chosen to live simply and I travel a lot by public transport. I am determined to ensure the Greens can make public transport more affordable and more available by encouraging public investment in green transport, by expanding and integrating transport systems across our state to ensure people, produce and goods are able to arrive at their destination in a timely, efficient and sustainable way.
I believe we need to focus on a green economy to create a more balance economy, healthier and innovative jobs especially important on the Gold Coast. I support the Greens policies to rebuild on tourisms and hospitality, and small business as many more people are employed in these industries than in mining. The old parties have invested and based their economic plans in mining and the resources boom which is now distorting our economy and stressing local Gold Coast businesses, to the detriment of even our creative industires like local film industry.
I am seriously concerned by the rush in the coal and coal seam gas industry that has resulted in there are now mining leases over 84% of Queensland. People have been denied a right to dissent and be heard and finally more people are becoming aware of the adverse health effects arising from these industries. Additionally the destruction of precious agricultural land will effect our food budgets and we will have to import foods that can no longer be grown replaced by coal mines or coal seam gas wells.
I support the Greens in their willingness to speak out on many important social and economic issues that are in the best interest of our local communities. I need your help to ensure that I can along with fellow Greens candidate work towards investing more in the social programs of better primary and preventative health issues, better education, better community and family support, better transport systems, and improvements to small business. Along with the Greens I want to ensure we have safe and happy communities that provide a thriving future for the next generation. I need your help and your vote.
Policies
I am especially interested in policies about
- Planning and disaster management
- Better primary and preventative health systems
- Affordable and effective public transport
- Local community focus on food and water security balance between economic development and lifestyle for future generation
- A moratorium on coal seam gas
- Container deposit legislation, it has worked in South Australia for many years, there is no reason we can’t do the same in Queensland
