Candidate for Mulgrave

About

Jim Cavill came to Cairns from Perth in 1989 marvelling at the beauty of
the reef and rainforest. Jim has worked on a volunteer basis for many
organisations, charities and sporting clubs. Jim’s passion is the
conservation of our natural environment while taking into account the need
to maintain an excellent quality of life for all far northern families.
Jim knows that conservation is a real issue, along with transport, health
and jobs.

Jim worked for many years in the aeronautical trade including 6 years in
the R.A.A.F. He has volunteer in the offices of the Cairns & Far North
Environment Centre, helped with the ‘Eco Fiesta’ and ‘Clean Up Australia
Day. Jim is a committed member of the Cairns Bicycle Users Group and
helped to lobby hard for new bikeways around the city.
Jim has been a single Dad for 17 years and has an adult son. Jim balances
his passion and deep respect for the natural world with a passion for
motor sport.

Jim was made an honorary member of the Cairns, Kart Racing club.  He is a
founding member of the FNQ Motor Sports Club where he took on various
committee responsibilities including Treasurer.
Jim has been an official for the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport
since the age of 13. One of Jim’s proudest volunteer jobs was to be a
track Marshal at 24 Formula 1 Grand Prix's in Australia.

Jim is a fitter and turner by trade, but has worked in customer service
roles and the hospitality trade. Jim is currently a full time student
studying events management. Jim would like to see diversification of the
TFNQTAFE to the Southern Suburbs allowing residents from Gordonvale and
further South, easier access to further education.

Jim demands that if further development and expansion occurs in Mulgrave,
Queensland Transport facilitates a doubling of the conventional rail lines
between Babinda and the city of Cairns. Halts at Babinda, Derail,
Gordonvale, Edmonton White Rock and Woree have to occur if Mulgrave is to
maintain the desired quality of life residents expect.
The failure of successive Governments is visible to every resident of
Mulgrave every single day.  Where do we go for quality health care? Not
Gordonvale, not Edmonton not even Woree.  The lack of a hospital in our
Southern suburbs is a sad indictment of past governments. It proves lack
of forethought and planning from both old parties. While some of the new
parties want to blame others for the crisis in Mulgrave’s health care? The
Greens want to work constructively with Queensland Health to find a
solution.

In 2010 Jim was made a life member Cairns Road Runners in recognition of
the amount of volunteer work he has undertaken over the past 20 years. Jim
wants to work just as hard, if not harder, in the future to make a real
difference to the voters in Mulgrave.  Jim knows how tough it can be in
the real world and will apply his experience and energy as a committed
Green who understands the real issues.

Policies

Jim’s policies include providing a rail commuter link to Cairns from Babinda by constructing a second parallel rail line.  Stations would be located at Deeral, Gordonvale, Edmonton, White Rock and Woree.

Jim would like to see a Southern campus of the TFNQ TAFE allowing residents from Gordonvale and further south easier access to further education.  This campus would be linked to Gordonvale High School and other schools in the area.

The lack of a medical facility in our southern suburbs is a sad indictment of past governments.  While some of the new parties want to blame others for the health crisis in Mulgrave, the Greens want to work constructively with Queensland Health.  Jim explains “We want to create a Mulgrave Community Health Centre which offers emergency services, a 24hr medical centre, and a preventative health scheme offering programs on healthy lifestyles, quality nutrition, and other long term strategies so people have less need to go to hospital in the first place”.
