Candidate for Toowoomba South

About

Trevor Smith was born and spent most of his life in Sydney's eastern suburbs before relocating to Toowoomba in 2007. Trevor has a love of travel and has visited some of the more remote and unusual destinations as well as many trips to Europe and the US. He also has a major interest in the fine arts, having exhibited a number of his original oil paintings in not only Sydney and Melbourne but also a recent show at the Toowoomba Regional Gallery in 2010.

Trevor has a wide and varied career background encompassing everything from being a postman to administration of small and medium sized businesses to working with various insurance companies and has currently been working in an administrative role at the University of Southern Queensland for the past two years.

Whilst Trevor has a diverse range of interests, his major passion is the impact man is having on the environment (both locally and internationally). With his moto being that you can't expect someone else to fight for what you believe in, if you are not prepared to stand up and take action yourself.

Since relocating to Toowoomba, Trevor has become acutely aware of the impact both coal seam gas and the many proposed coal mines can have not only on the surrounding Darling Downs but also in terms of the health impacts on residents in his electorate of Toowoomba South and to this end has joined forces with the "Friends of Felton" who are actively campaigning against the rapid expansion of large mining companies in the area.

Trevor is also an avid cyclist and is also campaigning for safer conditions for riders in the Toowoomba area, which he believes has flow on effects in terms of health and fitness as well as encouraging less conflict between motorist and cyclists in a crowded urban environment.
